5 iPad Accessories That Aren’t a Waste of Money

Most of the iPad accessories out there are pointless at best, and border on being absurd. While apps are probably the best “ipad accessories” you can invest in, there are some physical, tangible accessories that you just shouldn’t go without.

Over the past decade, there has been a growing trend in the computer accessories market, where apps and software are being seen more as “accessories” and the physical, tangible additions to your gadgets are more and more like “novelties.” This is especially true with the iPad. We’ve explored some of the absurd iPad accessories on the market today in an earlier article, acknowledging that the most innovative and useful additions to your iPad will most likely be app-based.

However, we were able to find a few key iPad accessories that do not occupy cyberspace and are actually worth investing in. Here is our quick rundown of 5 iPad accessories that aren’t a complete waste of money:

New, Hyped Up Apple Battery Charger Offers Greener Standby Power Outputs

Everyone knows that Apple isn’t in the consumer-driven rechargeable battery business — they leave that industry vertical to companies like Sanyo, Vapex, and Panasonic. However, behind the scenes, Apple has invested millions into the R&D of its own in-house rechargeable battery technology. The LiOn rechargeable batteries used in its iPad, iPhone 4, and latest round of MacBooks are unprecedented in how long they can hold their charge and continue to perform an optimum levels. This, of course, is great news for the Apple consumer, since most of Apple’s most popular product are mobile-based.

But just as Ferrari started out as a strictly race-oriented car builder and only eventually got into the street car business, so too has Apple thrown its hat into the consumer rechargeable batteries market, looking to share a slice of the A$ 39 billion dollar pie, which is projected to grow to A$ 56 billion by 2013.

Apple’s new consumer-based NiMH battery charger hit the Australian consumer market just recently and, even though a battery charger is a rather modest piece of technology for the company that brought us the iPad, iPhone 4, and MacBook, it has caused as much of a splash as many of its top-tier gadgets.

Video Reviewer Sprays Water on His iPad Case – With iPad Inside – To Prove It’s Waterproof

Ever wonder if all of the iPad cases that claim to be waterproof actually live up to their claim? This YouTube reviewer put his iPad case to the test and sprayed it with a hose – with his iPad inside!

There’s nothing that poses a bigger threat to your iPad than water. Apple does its best to build sturdy, rugged gadgets that can survive drops (both the falling and water kinds) by using strong PC polycarbonate plastic housings and tight assembly. But the bottom line is this: if moisture gets inside your iPad, it’s fried.

Add to this the fact that the iPad spends a lot of its life outside, and you can start to realize how a waterproof iPad case is an attractive idea for many iPad users.

But do you ever wonder if supposedly “waterproof” products, such as iPad cases, really live up to their own claims? After all, how many people are ever really going to put their waterproof iPad case to the test and risk ruining their iPad?

Well, this crazy YouTube tech reviewer did!

Zain Sehgal, also known as “iglaswegian” on YouTube, actually took a garden hose and sprayed his Uniea Omniverse iPad case with water – while his iPad was in it!

Is he crazy? Brilliant? You decide.

The Facts Don’t Lie: Most People Hate the iPad

Chart and poll courtest of MyType.com

A revealing new study indicates that the vast majority of people in the world either have no interest in the iPad or think it’s a piece of junk.

Since the release of the iPad in the Autumn (or Spring, depending on where you live), everyone in cyberspace has weighed in regarding the groundbreaking tablet. You could even say there’s as many opinions as there have been iPad sales worldwide. But until now, no quantifiable study has been done about iPad users, iPad critics, and the rest of the people who are somewhere in between.

Today, however, MyType.com’s scientific poll has spun off a wave of new reports on the kind of people who love the iPad as well as those who loathe it. While most people are debating the voracity of the poll’s juiciest and most controversial findings — that iPad users tend to be “Selfish Elites” while its critics are identified as “Independent Geeks” — most of the news coverage has missed an even more startling find: a vast majority of people just aren’t that impressed with the iPad.

In Case You Didn’t Notice, the iPad is Still the Only Real Tablet Device Out There

An image of HP's Slate, courtesy of PC World

Apple’s iPad continues to reign as king of the tablets, launching a whole sub-industry of iPad cases and accessories. But where are all of the competing tablet PCs promised at CES 2010?

It seems that whenever Apple debuts a groundbreaking new mobile device or computer, a whole new market segment opens up in the world of consumer electronics. Like a gadget supernova, new industry niches are formed like new suns and planets spinning out of a massive, exploding star. The latest star has been Apple’s iPad: in addition to the expectation that Apple will sell 10 million iPads in 2010 alone, thousands of iPad apps, iPad cases, and other iPad accessories have already exploded into the marketplace and will continue to do, generating a billion dollar market for products that are completely dependent on the iPad and its platform.

Given the fact that Apple has officially opened the market on tablet devices, why haven’t we seen any viable PC tablet contenders yet?

Product Review: Uniea’s Omniverse iPad Case

Uniea retro-fits one of their top-selling laptop cases for iPad case duty. But does it live up to expectations?

Uniea's Omniverse iPad case - frontWhen you start researching cases for gadgets, you quickly realize that creativity doesn’t dominate the consumer electronics accessories market. Although there are a myriad of different colors and textures to be found, most iPhone, iPod, and laptop cases utilize the same basic designs.

Moreover, when a new gadget debuts on the market, most case designers simply take an older design and retro-engineer it to fit the new dimensions. A perfect example of this are the current crop of iPad cases. When the iPad debuted, case designers had little time to prepare new case designs. So, they just borrowed their iPhone case designs and made them a little bit bigger. Simply stated, most of these cases are nothing more than overgrown iPhone 3Gs cases.

Uniea, however, started from a different place when it designed its first new iPad case. Rather than drawing from iPhone 3Gs case designs, they looked to their ever-popular Omniverse line of laptop cases, scaling down their 10.2″ netbook case to accomodate the 9.56 inch (242.8 mm) iPad.

Premium, Protective iPad Case Debuts In Australia

Of all the iPad cases we have reviewed on the market, this one gives the most protection.

Uniea's Omniverse iPad Case - FrontiPad fever has hit Australia. Pound for pound, Australia’s iPad craze has been just as strong as it was in the U.S. and Europe, with a reported 35,000 iPads selling out across Australia in the first weekend it debuted. Apple is quite hush-hush with early sales numbers of its new gizmos, but recently they reported that they have sold 3 million iPads worldwide, and expect to sell 10 million by the end of 2010.

Australia will most definitely continue to be part of that fervour.

Now that many Apple and gadget enthusiasts in Australia have snatched up their new toy, the next step is to load up on accessories. iPad apps make up the “internal” accessories for the breakthrough tablet, but as far as external accessories go, most people are searching for the perfect iPad case. Australia has benefitted in part from the delayed release of the device, since all of the major case manufactures, from Belkin and Case-logic to Griffin and iFrogz, were slow to come out with iPad case designs. However, the late May release of the iPad correlated perfectly with the releases of a new host of iPad cases from all of the major manufacturers.

Li-Ion Rechargeable Batteries: Will They Become the New King of the Rechargeable Battery Market?

Lithium Ion or “Li-Ion” rechargeable batteries have become the gold standard for high-end electronics. But will the technology overtake the entire consumer battery market?

When it comes to overall performance, Lithium Ion rechargeable battery technology is by far the most advanced in the world today. All of the top electronics devices use Li-Ion rechargeable batteries, such as laptops, iPhones, digital cameras, the Kindle, and many others. At the present time, hybrid car batteries are all NiMH rechargeable batteries. However, because Li-ion cells hold roughly twice as much energy per pound as do the previous generation of advanced batteries, it is believed that the next generation of hybrid car batteries will be Li-Ion, meaning that the charge and life cycle of the battery will last longer.

Because the Li-Ion has proven itself to be such an advanced design for making long-lasting rechargeable batteries, it didn’t take long for the technology to surface in your everyday AA, AAA, C, D, and 9-volt varieties. Energizer, for example, has attempted to outpace the wave of NiMH rechargeable batteries flooding the market now, and is offering both an advanced lithium and ultimate lithium battery that is quickly overshadowing their own NiMH product. Energizer’s “advanced lithium” AA batteries promise to offer the same powerful battery technology that you’d find in top-tier electronics, just in a smaller, lighter package, and surprisingly affordable package.

Australian iPad Debut Promises Fewer Bugs and Problems.

The iPad showed some early bugs in the U.S. and Europe. Will Australia benefit from a delayed release?

When the iPad finally makes it debut on 28 May in Australia, it will have been nearly four months to the day that Steve Jobs publicly announced the newest addition to Apple’s innovative line-up of mobile gadgets. Ever since the advent of the iMac in the 90s, Apple has built up a cult-like following of dévoteés who religiously purchase the company’s newest inventions as well as look to the future for what Apple might dreaming up for them down the line.

For quite a few years, Apple prophets had predicted a tablet device, and it has finally materialised in the form of the new iPad.
